Outdoors Report
For the Week of August 30, 2010
Brown County
Nick Cochran/Tim McCurdy
Fishing Report:
Ä Richmond Lake: The bluegill and white bass bite has been good. Anglers are catching bluegill with a bobber and worms along the docks. The crappie and walleye bite has been slow.
Ä Elm Lake: Anglers have been catching northern pike, crappie, perch, and walleye. The northern pike bite has been great pulling plugs or using bottom bouncers with spinners.
Ä James River/Elm River: Fishing has been slow with the warm weather.
Ä Willow Dam: No fishing activity. Fishermen are reminded that Willow Dam has a boating restriction and does not allow any motorized boats.
Hunting Report:
Ä Dove numbers seem to be low across the county. Good numbers of Canada geese using harvested wheat fields in the eastern part of Brown County.
Clark County
Jeff Lautenslager
Fishing Report:
Ä Dry Lake: The fishing has been fair. Mostly small walleyes but they are fun to catch. This is a great place to take a kid fishing.
Ä The rest of the area has little to no activity.
Hunting Report:
Ä The goose hunting has been alright in Clark County. Most guys are struggling to get birds to decoy. It appears that the geese want to land in their own family groups and not in with a group of decoys. One other problem some guys are running into is that there is so many wheat fields around the geese are hard to pattern.
Codington County
Mike Klosowski/Nick Fleury
Fishing Report:
Ä Lake Kampeska: Fishing pressure has been minimal on Lake Kampeska. GFP Fisheries crew electrofished last week and saw good numbers of age 0 white bass and some shiners, so there appears to be a good food source in Lake Kampeska.
Ä Goose Lake: Anglers are catching good numbers of walleye in the 8-10” range with an occasional keeper.
Hunting Report:
Ä Goose numbers in Codington County have decreased since the opener. There is still opportunity for good success if you can find the right field.
Ä Reminder: Residents hunting ducks, geese, tundra swan, sandhill crane, mourning doves, snipe and coot need a State Migratory Bird Certification.
Day County
Casey Dowler
Fishing Report:
Ä Antelope: few boats out catching a few walleyes in morning and evening.
Ä Bitter: Really good for walleyes; some bigger walleyes caught over weekend mainly pulling plugs
Ä Blue Dog: Little to no activity.
Ä Enemy Swim: Smallmouth bass bite and bluegill bite have both been good.
Ä Waubay: Really good fishing, probably the best lake in the county right now for walleyes. Anglers are pulling plugs, using bottom bouncers or jigging over side of boat.
Hunting Report:
Ä Hunter success was very good for geese this past weekend. There were quite a few hunters out. Be sure to check regulations for the August goose season.
Deuel County
Dave Bartling
Fishing Report:
Ä Lake Alice: Little activity.
Ä Lake Cochrane: Bluegills still biting with some perch and largemouth bass mixed in. Slow for walleyes.
Ä Round: Some northern pike caught.
Ä Bullhead: Little activity.
Ä Lake Oliver: Small perch biting but not many keepers.
Ä Fish Lake: No activity.
Ä Clear Lake: Weeds starting to uproot but no fishing the past week.
Hunting Report:
Ä Not much Canada goose hunting the final weekend of the August Management Take season due to warm temperatures and strong winds. Canada goose hunting is closed this week and reopens Saturday, September 4 for the Early Fall Canada goose hunting season.
Faulk & Spink County
Cody Symens

Fishing Report:
Ä Big Stone Lake: The perch bite remains pretty good when the wind isn't blowing. Otherwise a few walleyes are being picked up.
Ä Summit Lake: Has been pretty good for perch and walleyes
Ä Hunter Quarry: remains slow
Hunting Report:
Ä Goose hunters found a few more birds this last weekend. Remember that the Goose season is now closed until September 4. Also, dove season opens September 1.
Hamlin County
Brook Brown
Fishing Report:
Ä Lake Mary: Fishing is slow.
Ä Lake Poinsett: Anglers are catching some perch and walleye. Anglers catching Perch are bobber fishing along weed edges and other structure. Anglers should remember that Lake Poinsett has a 15 inch minimum size limit for walleye. A reminder to boaters: There is still a 300 ft No Wake Zone on Poinsett. This means keep your wake to a minimum and travel at speeds less than 5 MPH when you are within 300 ft of shore. Thank you.
Ä Lake St. John: No fishing pressure.
Ä Lake Albert: Anglers are catching a few small walleyes.
Hunting Report:
Ä Reminder Goose season is closed Aug 30 through Sept 3rd. The western half of Hamlin County continues to hold good numbers of Canada geese.
Marshall County
Bob Losco
Fishing Report:
Ä Very little fishing pressure this past weekend, especially with the wind on Sunday. The few anglers that ventured out had some limited success. Opitz was still the hot spot with most anglers at least catching some walleye and several limits caught.
Hunting Report:
Ä Only a few goose hunters out, probably due to the warm weather. There have been plenty of geese but you will need to scout to find the field. The geese are really bunched up. The August season is over and the goose hunters can start hunting again on September 4th.
Ä Dove season opens on September 1st. The season looks promising as I’ve observed a number of areas were the doves are gathered in good numbers. Don’t forget your Federal Stamp.
McPherson & Edmunds County
Joe Galbraith
Fishing Report:
Ä Mina Lake: Fishing is slow.
Hunting Report:
Ä No report.
Roberts County
Dean Shultz
Fishing Report:
Ä Lake Traverse: Fishing has slowed down for walleyes. The catfish bite seems to be doing well. Bluegill action is slow, but anglers are hooking a few white bass and drum.
Ä Most other lakes have little to no pressure.
Hunting Report:
Ä Goose hunters ended the early season on a good note and should have pretty good luck in the Sept. season in a couple of days.
